Albino hedgehog spotted in Taunton

12:00pm Monday 20th July 2009

By Phil Hill

ADRIAN Cawte snapped this rare albino hedgehog hunting for food in Taunton one night last week.

Adrian, of Penny Close, Wellington, believes there are only about 100 such hedgehogs in the whole country.

He said: “Although not a pure white specimen, it has pink eyes and pink nose instead of the normal black, very pale spines and fur and its skin was lacking pigmentation.”

  1. Well, you've frightened it. Clearly terrified out of it's wits. Fear even radiating from it's eyes, you can see in that photograph there. Little critter has turned as white as a ghost. Poor little bugger!

  2. While I'm not sure if you mean your comment as a joke I can assure you or anyone else reading this that the hedgehog was in no way given cause to be alarmed and/or frightened.
It did not display any signs of distress, did not curl into a ball or make any move to escape in fact it appeared to be more inquisitive than anything else.
In fact advice sought from Tiggywinkles was to capture the hedgehog if seen again and take it to a wildlife hospital/sanctuary as albino hedgehogs have a high mortality rate in the wild and benefit from specialist care.

  3. Adrian - please let us know if you see this hedgehog again and what happens next. Some of us are genuinely interested!
