Housebuilder agrees to create 100 acre wildflower meadow on Swindon development

Wildlife Trust welcomes proposals for new Swindon Nature Park

June 2012. Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has negotiated a great result for people and wildlife by working with housebuilder Crest Nicholson to include a nature park at their development at Tadpole Farm, north of Swindon. Subject to planning consent, the Trust will restore 100 acres of arable land to wildflower meadows with open public access.
1,700 new homes
"This area was put aside for housing in the Swindon Council Core Strategy so we knew that proposals for development would go ahead. But we objected to the initial application for 1,700 new homes because we didn't think there was enough benefit for wildlife and the people of Swindon", Dr.Gary Mantle, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust Director explained.
Great habitat for bats, barn owls, skylarks and hares
"But now, at the last minute, we're delighted to have agreed plans for a nature park. Standing up for wildlife is an important part of our work and we're delighted to have achieved such a success. We'll create new meadows with wildflowers and hope to encourage rare plants such as snakeshead fritillaries and green-winged orchids. The new nature park will provide a great habitat for bats, barn owls, skylarks and hares. Running alongside the River Ray we hope the nature park will provide a new riverside home for otters.
Gary added: "Having an area of open space so close to where people live will be a really good opportunity for local residents to simply step outside and be close to nature. We know this makes a major contribution to our health and wellbeing."
This ambitious project will make a major contribution to the Trust's goal of creating Living Landscapes across Wiltshire which protect wildlife and ensure people have access to wonderful wildlife rich green spaces.
