Arab sheikhs to hunt rare bird in Kazakhstan

ASTANA – Kazakhstani Prime Minister Karim Massimov August 31 allowed four Arab sheikhs to hunt the rare MacQueen’s bustard (Chlamydotis macqueenii) September 1 through November 15, KazTAG reported September 10.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the UAE, has permission to hunt 71 of the birds in three state wildlife preserves. Three other sheikhs – one from Qatar, two from the UAE – are authorised to hunt 28, 11 and 10 bustards each, KazTAG added.

The same four sheikhs hunted the birds in Kazakhstan in 2008, Fergana News reported. They will use their own falcons during the hunt and pay 420,600 KZT (US $2,800) for each bustard they bag, media reported.
