Two fishing vessels hit rocks in Alaska’s Prince William Sound – Small oil spill

Small oil spill in Prince William Sound

July 2013. The US Coast Guard and Alaska Chadux (A not-for-profit oil spill response organization headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska.) responded to a reported fuel spill from a grounded fishing vessel in Passage Canal six miles east of Whittier in Prince William Sound.

The crew of the 104-foot Naknek Spirit ran aground with five people aboard and ruptured its starboard fuel tank. The tank was reportedly carrying 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel, but crewmembers managed to transfer 1,500 gallons into an intact tank. The vessel is reportedly carrying an estimated total of 10,000 gallons of diesel and 1,200 gallons of gasoline. The vessel owner hired Alaska Chadux to remove the pollution threat posed by the vessel and to mitigate the impact of the spilled fuel.

The site of the grounding is reportedly a Stellar sea lion sensitive area.

Second boat grounded
A 65-foot fishing tender, The Hana Cove, has struck a rock which damaged the vessel's fiberglass hull and caused the engine compartment and second hold to flood. The crew reported that pumps aboard the tender were unable to keep up with the flooding and they had beached the vessel on Culross Island. Hana Cove Hana Cove Fisheries, LLC, who owns the Hana Cove, contracted Alaska Marine Response, LLC out of Cordova to deploy boom around the vessel, remove the fuel aboard, and prepare a vessel salvage plan.
