Rarer Than Giant Pandas: Chillingham Wild Cattle Numbers Rise Above 100 For First Time Since 1860

There are only around 130 in existence, meaning they are rarer than giant pandas and Siberian tigers.

Around 100 of the animals live in the grounds of Chillingham Castle where their ancestors have roamed for 800 years, with the others living in Scotland.

They are the only remaining indigenous cattle species in the United Kingdom.

The cattle have been kept apart from other cow and bull species to ensure their genetic line is not contaminated.

This means they are some of the most inbred animals on the planet, yet they are very healthy, making them even more unique.

The cattle have never been touched by human hands, and as a result, they are more agressive than the placid dairy cows you see dotted around the English countryside.

However, Chillingham wild cattle warden Richard Marsh doesn't believe that should deter visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the beasts from a safe distance.
