France announces suspension of all raw ivory exports and no importation of elephants

A year after the destruction of three tonnes of seized ivory stockpiled by French authorities the French government has announced the suspension of all raw ivory exports.

In a letter directed to the Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, Ségolène Royal, 37 NGOs asked the French government to take immediate action to ban all trade and export of raw ivory and parts of unworked ivory in France. The UK already has such a ban in place.

In addition, Mrs Royal confirmed that France would not be receiving any elephants from Zimbabwe, as Zimbabwean authorities had previously suggested.

Celine Sissler-Bienvenu, Director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) France and Francophone Africa, says: “We praise the decision undertaken by Mrs Royal.
